20 Nov 2003 From: Predrag To: Tyson Shepherd Subject: Riedo's parameters (to Tyson) Tyson The parameters for the simulation attainable in Professor Reido's experiment that you will use are The natural frequency for the vertical spring is $ \omega_y= \sqrt{k_y/m} = 35 KHz $ the horizontal springs natural frequency is $ \omega_x= \sqrt{k_x/m} = 442 KHz $ The experimental tip velocity is bounded between $ 1 nm/sec < v_x < 50 \mu m/sec. $ You also need to compute the mass of the tip - from the exact geometry of the tip, and multiplying the volume by the specific density. You have the necessary info (right?) but have not included this into the text of the project yet. Professor Riedo has not given us an estimate of the restitution coefficent yet, but if we have a good proposal how to measure it, she can probably measure it. Assume something like 0.8? I have no idea what would be sensible, but of course, it is very important.
