Impact Oscilator – Friction Project Tyson Shepherd Schedule: * Thu Oct 23 2003: The system will be recast into billiards. The equations of the system will fall out. The Jacobian of the system should be found. * Thu Oct 30 2003: The Jacobian will be revised because mistakes happen. The general program written in FORTRAN will be mostly done. Hopefully we will begin to see some nice bifurcation plots over a variation in velocity. * Thu Nov 06 2003: The general program will be revised to account for some unforeseen error like energy being conserved or something. We will see some Poincare’ maps this week. * Thu Nov 13 2003: This week we will play with the Lorentz map for the height of the ball above the table. We will also look at the PIM-triple method more intensely. * Thu Nov 20 2003: We will finally get to the grindstone about periodic orbit theory. * Thu Nov 27 2003: The coefficient of kinetic friction will be estimated. * Thu Dec 04 2003: The draft of paper will be ready. Many errors will present themselves this week so loose ends will need to be tied up. * Thu Dec 11 2003: Term paper deadline.
