This class will be taught completely remotely. You will not have to
show up in the classroom this semester. Lectures will be taught via
Bluejeans Meetings App. The links will be provided in Canvas.
Description and Objectives
This course will teach you the basic principles of Quantum
Mechanics. You will learn theoretical principles and problem solving
skills applied to the quantum world of atoms, molecules and photons.
The knowledge obtained in this class will serve as a foundation for
further advanced classes such as Quantum Mechanics II (PHYS 4143),
Statistical Mechanics (PHYS 4142), and various electives.
Textbook
"A modern approach to Quantum Mechanics". 2nd Edition. John. S. Townsend ISBN 978-1-891389-78-8.
Pre-requisites
PHYS 2212 or 2232 (Intro Physics II), MATH 2552 or 2562 (Differential Equations).
Complete your homework assignments on paper, then scan
your work to a single pdf file (we cannot grade multiple image
files or other formats), upload it to Canvas under [Assignments]
tab.
Make sure your pdf is clear and readable. Any smartphone app should be OK – we have tried Scanner Pro on iOS, Top Scanner on Android.
Your homework will be graded online, with the score, grader’s comments posted in Canvas.
Tests
The tests will be administered at the scheduled times. You will
need clear paper and a pen. The tests will last 60 minutes and will
cover the material presented since the previous test. You will have
additional 15 minutes to scan your test and upload it to Canvas.
You can use your own printed/written materials (class notes, books
etc.) during the tests. Interaction/collaboration with anyone else
during the test is an Honor Code violation. The final exam will cover
all the material studied in the course. It will last 2 hours 50 minutes
and will be scheduled according to institute policy.
Test procedure:
You will log in to canvas AND Bluejeans Meeting (the
link to the meeting will be announced in Canvas prior to the test)
and remain logged in during the whole test, with laptop or
smartphone camera open and pointed at you and your work area. Ask
instructor questions in the chat.
Once the test starts the file with appropriate name (eg.
"Test_1.pdf") will appear within [Files] tab in Canvas. You may
open the file and start working immediately. You do not need to print
this file. Write your solutions on your own clear paper.
On Canvas [Assignments] tab you will find the assignment
with appropriate name (eg. “Test 1”). Once you are done with your
exam, scan your solution and upload it to Canvas for that test
“Assignment”. Only single multi-page pdf files will be accepted (as for
the homework pdf scans). Additional 15 minutes will be added to
posted Final Exam time to accommodate scanning and uploading.
